At around year three of his Reign Tutankhaten changed his name to Tutankhamun , although at this point it appears that the traditional and 'Atenist' cults coexisted.

Also at around this time the royal court was transferred back to Thebes and the Royal Tomb at Akhetaten dismantled. The contents were shipped back to the Valley of the Kings and possibly then stored in KV55 before being distributed round other Tombs, with Tiye ending up in the tomb of her husband Amenhotep III, Smenkhkare remaining in KV55 and Akhenaten, Nefertiti, Kiya and the royal princesses being lost to history. Some of the funerary objects also ended up in the tomb of Tutankhamun.
