Although the Aten had been declared the supreme state god in around year 5 of Akhenaten's reign, the worship of other gods was still tolerated.

This changed in year 9 when Akhenaten went on the offensive against the 'old' gods. He decalred that the Aten, rather than being the supreme god, was the only god and outlawed the worship of all others. Images of Amun were destroyed throughout Egypt, and even the word 'gods' was removed.
